Frequently Asked Questions
What type of Pilates do you offer?
I offer Pilates classes using professional equipment such as the Reformer, Tower, Chair, and mat Pilates using small props, like resistance bands, balls and the resistance circles. Sessions are carefully structured to build strength, improve mobility, support posture, and enhance overall movement quality.
Can Pilates help if I have an injury, pain or movement limitation?
Yes. Sessions can be adapted to your individual needs, abilities and goals, including when you are recovering from an injury, managing persistent pain or experiencing movement limitations. We focus on strength, mobility, control and confidence in movement. Where appropriate, I may recommend advice or clearance from your healthcare professional before starting. Clinical Pilates is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment.
Do I need a referral or diagnosis to start Pilates?
If you have an ongoing medical condition or have recently had an operation, you must first be cleared to exercise by your healthcare professional. A referral may also be required to help me understand your needs and ensure your sessions are safe and appropriately tailored. If you have an injury, medical condition, or are returning to movement after time off, we’ll discuss this with you before your first session and adapt the work accordingly. If you’re working alongside a physiotherapist or healthcare professional, Pilates can complement that support.
Is equipment-based Pilates suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. The equipment provides guidance, support, and resistance, making it ideal for beginners as well as experienced movers. You’ll be guided clearly through each exercise, with plenty of options offered along the way.
What are the benefits of Pilates with equipment?
Equipment-based Pilates helps to:
-
Improve strength and stability
-
Support joint health and mobility
-
Enhance posture and balance
-
Reduce the risk of injury
-
Build body awareness and confidence in movement
It’s a highly effective way to stay active and resilient over time.
Is Pilates only for people recovering from injuries?
Not at all. While Pilates is excellent for rehabilitation and injury management, it’s equally beneficial for those who want to stay fit, strong, and mobile at any stage of life. Many clients use Pilates as a long-term movement practice to support everyday life, sport, and general wellbeing.
Do you offer private and small group sessions?
Yes. I offer private sessions and duets in my studio, and small group classes in other venues. Smaller numbers allow for personalised attention, precise cueing, and a programme that evolves with you. Please check MY WEEKLY SCHEDULE section, to find more.
How often should I do Pilates?
This depends on your goals. Some people attend once a week to maintain mobility and strength, while others come more frequently for rehabilitation, injury prevention, or performance support. I can help you decide what works best for you.
What should I wear or bring to a session?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Grip socks are recommended for studio sessions for hygiene. All equipment and props are provided.
Is Pilates suitable as I get older?
Yes, Pilates is an excellent way to support strength, balance, coordination, and bone health as we age. Sessions are adapted to remain safe, effective, and appropriately challenging over time. My oldest client is 82 years old!
Do you offer sports massage?
Yes. I am a qualified Level 3 Sports Massage Therapist, trained at St Mary’s University. I offer tailored treatments to help relieve muscular tension, support recovery, improve mobility and maintain healthy movement. Sports massage is suitable for active and non-active people alike, you do not need to be an athlete to benefit.
Can sports massage complement Pilates?
Yes. Sports massage and Pilates work very well together. Massage can help address areas of muscular tension and support recovery, while Pilates focuses on building strength, stability, mobility and better movement patterns. When appropriate, I can use my understanding of both disciplines to provide a more joined-up and personalised approach.
What happens during a sports massage appointment?
Before your treatment, we’ll discuss your health, lifestyle, activities and any areas of discomfort or tension. I may also carry out a brief postural or movement assessment. Your treatment will then be adapted to your individual needs, comfort and preferred level of pressure.
Is sports massage only for athletes?
Not at all. Sports massage can benefit anyone experiencing muscular tightness, stiffness or fatigue, including people whose work involves prolonged sitting, standing or repetitive movement. It can also support those returning to exercise or managing the physical demands of an active lifestyle.
Is sports massage suitable if I have an injury or medical condition?
This depends on the nature and stage of the condition. Sports massage does not diagnose or replace medical treatment. In some cases, I may recommend seeking advice or clearance from your GP, physiotherapist or another healthcare professional before treatment. Your health and safety will always come first.
